Tottenham’s Moussa Dembélé Focused on Spurs Future Amid Sunderland Interest
Despite limited minutes last season, Tottenham midfielder Moussa Dembélé is determined to revive his career at White Hart Lane. The 28-year-old Belgian international of Malian descent has been linked with a move to Sunderland, who are reportedly ready to pay over €20 million to secure his services. However, Dembélé insists his priority remains with Spurs.
The former Fulham man struggled for consistent playing time under Mauricio Pochettino last season, often finding himself on the bench. Yet after an encouraging pre-season, he has earned a starting spot in the team—albeit in a less familiar role as a right winger.
In a statement on the club’s official website, Dembélé acknowledged the challenge of adapting to his new position but remains focused on improving his end product:
“I want to score or create goal-scoring opportunities. The statistics show I need to score more, so that’s something I want to improve—to show I can be more effective in front of goal.”
He added that he’s already beginning to adjust to his new role on the right flank and aims to contribute decisively:
“I’ve already played a few matches on the right and I’m focusing on being more dangerous in front of goal. I want to be decisive personally and help the team—that’s the most important thing. There’s a good atmosphere here and I want to be part of this project.”
With his contract running until 2017, Dembélé is not actively seeking a departure, despite Sunderland’s interest. Manager Mauricio Pochettino also appears reluctant to let the experienced midfielder leave, reportedly placing a €21 million valuation on him—an amount Sunderland would need to meet to open talks.
Dembélé remains committed to proving his worth in north London:
“I want to fight for Tottenham. That will be my priority: to give everything for the club and do what the coach expects of me.”
As the new Premier League season unfolds, Dembélé will be hoping his improved versatility and determination can secure him a consistent place in Pochettino’s plans.
