Tottenham explain Pape Matar Sarr’s delayed return after World Cup break
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has clarified the reasons behind Pape Matar Sarr’s extended absence from pre-season training, insisting the Senegal midfielder’s delayed return is not related to disciplinary or sporting issues.
Sarr, along with Uruguay international Rodrigo Bentancur, had not returned to the Tottenham squad as expected following the 2026 World Cup, leading to questions about their situations. However, De Zerbi has moved to explain the circumstances behind their delayed arrivals.
The Italian coach revealed that he had spoken separately with both players after the tournament and made decisions based on their individual situations.
While Bentancur requested additional time off after describing the previous season as physically demanding, Sarr’s extended break was granted because of a personal matter.
De Zerbi stressed that there was no disagreement between the players and the club, making it clear that their absence should not be viewed as a punishment or a sign of dissatisfaction.
The Spurs boss highlighted the importance of both midfielders to his plans and described the decision as part of a personalised approach to player management following an intense international tournament.
Sarr represented Senegal at the 2026 World Cup, although his involvement was limited. The 23-year-old featured for only 65 minutes during the competition, meaning he could have potentially returned earlier than some other players.
Despite that limited playing time, the midfielder’s situation has attracted attention due to Tottenham’s increased competition in the middle of the pitch.
The arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have strengthened the club’s midfield options and increased competition for places.
Senegal were eliminated by Belgium in the round of 32, but 26 days after that exit, Sarr had still not linked up with his Tottenham team-mates.
His situation remains similar to Bentancur’s, with De Zerbi maintaining that both players’ delayed returns are the result of personal circumstances and carefully managed recovery periods rather than injury concerns or internal problems.
Tottenham are continuing their pre-season preparations, with the club expecting both midfielders to return once their individual situations have been resolved.
De Zerbi’s comments were aimed at removing uncertainty surrounding the pair and reaffirming their importance to the squad ahead of the new campaign.
