The photo depicting Emmanuel Adebayor and Assou-Ekotto smiling after Tottenham’s 5-0 defeat to Liverpool sparked controversy on Sunday. Fans were dismayed by their seemingly lighthearted attitude following such a significant loss, especially considering Assou-Ekotto is currently on loan at QPR.
In response to the growing controversy on Monday, Adebayor took to his Twitter account to clarify the situation. He apologized to all Spurs fans who perceived their demeanor as enjoying the defeat and explained that the photo was taken before the match, emphasizing that he couldn’t have known the score. Adebayor asserted, “I would NEVER DO THAT.”
He further addressed the pose with three fingers, stating that it’s a habitual posture in all his photos, and he shared several examples to illustrate his point. All this unfolded amid the context of club manager Andre Villas-Boas being sacked on the same day.
The tweets read: “I apologize to all Spurs fans who thought from the Assou-Ekotto picture that we were making fun out of the defeat. That picture was taken BEFORE the game. I couldn’t have possibly known the score. I would NEVER DO THAT. That pose is how I pose in all my pictures.”
As for the pose with the three fingers, Adebayor explains that he always takes photos in this posture, adding several photos: “And I am used to taking this pose in all my photos…”
The controversy occurred in December 2013, and it’s worth noting that developments in the situation may have transpired since then.
