Toni Kroos has told the Spanish Football Federation that he intends to enrol on a coaching course for former professional players in the 2027-28 season, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
The former Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder is expected to begin working towards a Category One coaching licence, which would qualify him to manage a team.
Kroos’ current qualifications allow him to work as an assistant coach, but not as a head coach. Completing the course would represent the next stage in his move towards a full coaching role.
The 36-year-old currently runs the academy he founded in Boadilla, in the Spanish capital Madrid. His decision to pursue formal coaching qualifications comes despite his retirement from playing in summer 2024.
Kroos ended his career after Germany’s participation in Euro 2024. He had previously announced that he wanted to spend more time with his wife and children, while also focusing on personal projects, including a popular podcast with his brother Felix and the Toni Kroos Academy.
However, AS reports that his return to football now appears increasingly close, this time in a coaching capacity.
According to the newspaper, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez would like Kroos to have a role at the club. His possible involvement is being closely followed by Real Madrid supporters, who hold the former player in high regard.
Kroos spent 10 years at Real Madrid after joining from Bayern Munich in 2014, winning 23 trophies during his time at the club.
His honours in Spain included five Champions League titles and four La Liga championships. He also won the 2014 World Cup with Germany and made 114 international appearances.
Kroos retired as one of the most decorated players of his generation, having helped Real Madrid establish sustained success in domestic and European competition. His planned participation in the coaching course could provide a route into a new role within the game, with Real Madrid among the clubs interested in retaining a connection with him.
