Tomori opens up on England exclusion despite stellar Serie A performances

Fikayo Tomori has voiced his disappointment over being overlooked by the England national team despite excelling for AC Milan in Serie A. Since joining the Italian side from Chelsea in 2021, the 26-year-old defender has established himself as a pivotal figure, yet his last appearance for England came in November 2023 during a match against Malta.

Tomori, who has five England caps, admitted he remains hopeful that under new manager Thomas Tuchel, his fortunes could change.

Fikayo Tomori

I try not to think about it. I focus on what I am doing here.

If I keep doing what I’m doing, eventually it’s going to come, he said.

Acknowledging the difficulty of his omission from major tournaments, including the 2022 World Cup, Tomori reflected on conversations with former manager Gareth Southgate.

We spoke. It’s always tough to see things rationally.

Fikayo Tomori

At that moment, you think selfishly, ‘Why am I not going? Why is he taking this person instead?’ But the decision is made, and I can’t change it.

Since arriving in Milan, Tomori has thrived, becoming a first-choice centre-back and reuniting with former Chelsea teammate Tammy Abraham.

He credited Milan legend Paolo Maldini for convincing him to make the move.

When I first got the chance, it was shocking, but talking to Maldini made the decision easier.

Despite the setbacks, Tomori remains committed to his goal of representing England in major tournaments such as the World Cup and European Championship.

He played in Milan’s recent Coppa Italia clash against Sassuolo and is expected to feature in their upcoming Serie A match against second-placed Atalanta.

Tomori’s ongoing exclusion has sparked debate, given his consistent performances at the highest level in Italy, and his determination to secure a return to the Three Lions squad continues to drive him forward.
