Tomas Albornoz faces misconduct hearing over referee confrontation after Argentina defeat to England

Argentine fly-half Tomas Albornoz is facing a World Rugby misconduct hearing after angrily confronting referee Angus Gardner in the immediate aftermath of Argentina’s Nations Championship defeat by England.

Albornoz remonstrated with the Australian official on the pitch at Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero, after a dramatic late Argentinian try was ruled out on the advice of the television match official (TMO). England held on to win the match 31-24.

World Rugby has since confirmed that the 27-year-old has been charged under its strengthened framework to tackle abuse of match officials and could face a multi-week suspension.

World Rugby opens misconduct case

In a formal statement, the sport’s global governing body announced disciplinary action against the Argentina No 10.

“Tomas Albornoz has been issued with misconduct charges following Argentina’s Nations Championship match against England at Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero on 18 July, 2026,” a World Rugby statement read.

“In line with the remit of the Match Official Abuse Sanction Process, the charges relate to events following the final whistle. Albornoz was seen remonstrating with the match officials following the final whistle.

“The hearing details will be confirmed shortly.”

Television footage widely shared on social media shows Albornoz approaching Gardner and continuing to protest after the referee had confirmed the TMO’s recommendation to disallow what Argentina believed to be a match-saving score.

Crackdown on referee abuse

The case has been brought under World Rugby’s Match Official Abuse Sanction Process, a framework introduced to provide a clearer and more consistent way of dealing with incidents involving verbal or physical abuse, aggressive confrontations or public criticism of referees and their assistants.

The framework is also intended to address the wider issue of online abuse, with governing bodies increasingly concerned that televised or viral confrontations with officials can fuel harassment on social media.

French rugby journalist Gauthier Baudin highlighted the potential consequences for the playmaker, posting that:

The tweet underlines that, as part of the drive to clamp down on referee abuse, the fly-half is at risk of a ban running to several weeks if the misconduct charge is upheld.

Late drama in Nations Championship clash

The incident followed a tense Nations Championship encounter in which Argentina pushed England hard before falling just short.

With the Pumas trailing 31-24 deep into added time, they thought they had snatched a levelling try, only for the score to be overturned after TMO review. Gardner’s final whistle came moments later, triggering furious protests from Albornoz.

World Rugby has not disclosed the precise wording of the exchange between the player and the officials, but the decision to activate the abuse sanction process indicates it regards the conduct as serious enough to merit a formal disciplinary response.

Possible implications for Argentina

No date has yet been announced for the disciplinary hearing, and Argentina’s rugby union has not publicly commented on the case.
