Tom Saintfiet, the Belgian coach, has taken on a new role as the head coach of the Liberian national team, the Lone Stars. His appointment comes with the aim of guiding Liberia through the qualifiers for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). Saintfiet had been without a coaching position since his departure from Malawi following the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
Before joining Liberia, Saintfiet was reportedly considered for the coaching position in Togo, where his name was among the five preselected candidates after the Ministry of Sports and the Togolese Football Federation (FTF) issued a call for applications. However, he ultimately embarked on his journey with Liberia, with his first match scheduled against Lesotho in the CAN 2015 preliminaries on May 18.
Saintfiet’s coaching experience extends beyond his tenure in Africa, having previously coached national teams such as Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia. His appointment marks a new chapter for Liberian football as they seek qualification for the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations.
While Saintfiet’s name was in consideration for the Togo national team coaching role, it seems the Togolese Hawks will be pursuing other options, allowing Saintfiet to focus on his new venture with Liberia.
