Tom Saintfiet Denies Liberia Coaching Appointment, Affirms Commitment to Togo Job

In a surprising twist to recent reports, Belgian football coach Tom Saintfiet has firmly denied signing a contract to lead Liberia’s national football team, contradicting earlier claims widely circulated by regional media and even echoed on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) website.

Earlier this week, multiple outlets reported that Saintfiet had agreed to take charge of the Lone Stars ahead of their 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. However, in an exclusive response to the editorial team at Africa Top Sports, Saintfiet clarified that no formal agreement has been made.

“I have no contact with Liberia,” Saintfiet said, adding that while a Liberian football representative had indeed been reaching out to him since 2013—shortly after his departure from the Malawi national team—those communications had not developed into any form of negotiation or deal.

The 41-year-old coach, known for his extensive managerial experience across Africa, emphasized that his current focus lies elsewhere. “Togo remains my priority,” he confirmed, shedding light on his active involvement in the West African nation’s ongoing search for a new head coach.

Saintfiet is reportedly among the finalists shortlisted by the Togolese Football Federation (FTF) and the country’s Ministry of Sports, both of whom are overseeing the recruitment process for the senior national team, the Sparrowhawks. According to sources, Saintfiet participated in interviews held by the local selection committee and is now awaiting an official decision.

For Togo, the coaching decision carries significant weight, as the country aims to rebuild a competitive squad capable of qualifying for continental competitions and restoring its past footballing glory. The team is currently preparing for crucial matches in the 2015 AFCON qualifying campaign.

Saintfiet’s coaching résumé includes stints with Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and Malawi, along with advisory and technical roles in the Middle East and Asia. His deep understanding of African football and his previous experience navigating the challenges of national team management have made him a strong contender for the Togo role.

The confusion surrounding the Liberia job highlights the chaotic nature of international football appointments, where speculation often runs ahead of official confirmation. While Saintfiet’s name may have been linked to multiple teams across the continent, he insists that his immediate ambition is to take charge in Lomé.

As of now, Saintfiet remains in Belgium, closely monitoring developments from afar. The coming days are expected to bring clarity, especially from the Togolese side, whose final decision could not only determine Saintfiet’s next destination but also influence the trajectory of their national football team in the years to come.
