As part of their preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualifying tournament, the Cameroonian women’s volleyball team will convene for a training camp from January 6 to 12, 2020. Head coach Jean René Akono has called up 14 players to participate in this intensive preparation period, aiming to fine-tune the squad ahead of the Continental Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Among the selected players are six of Akono’s standout performers: Raïssa Nasser, Henriette Koulla, Stéphanie Fotso, Christelle Nana, Faouziwa Abdoulkarim, and Laëtitia Moma. These athletes are considered the backbone of the team, bringing experience, skill, and leadership to a squad determined to secure a spot at the Tokyo Olympics. The inclusion of these key players highlights the coach’s strategy to build a competitive team capable of challenging the best in the continent.

The Cameroonian Lionesses will face a challenging path to qualification, especially after missing out at the Intercontinental Tournament in Brazil. Their campaign will require focused preparation, tactical discipline, and cohesion on the court to overcome the competition. Notably, some of the continent’s traditionally strong volleyball nations—Algeria, Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, DR Congo, and Senegal—will be absent from this particular qualifying phase, presenting Cameroon with an opportunity to capitalize on the reduced field and assert themselves as a dominant force.

This training camp is a critical component of the team’s Olympic quest, as it provides an environment for players to develop strategies, build chemistry, and improve their physical and technical readiness. Coach Akono is expected to use this period to assess player form, experiment with lineups, and strengthen the team’s defensive and offensive systems, ensuring they are fully prepared for the high stakes of the qualifying tournament.

For the players, participation in the camp represents both an honor and a responsibility. Each athlete will be expected to contribute to a disciplined and cohesive team environment, demonstrating commitment to both individual performance and collective success. The Lionesses’ preparation reflects a broader ambition to elevate Cameroonian volleyball on the international stage and secure the nation’s place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

As January approaches, the focus will shift to rigorous training sessions and tactical drills aimed at sharpening the team’s skills and mental resilience. With the six key players leading by example, the Cameroonian Lionesses hope to maximize their preparation period, translating hard work on the court into strong performances during the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
