Roger Aholou has reached a mutual agreement with Espérance Sportive de Tunis to terminate his contract, bringing his brief stint at the Tunisian club to an end.
The 31-year-old Togolese midfielder, whose deal was initially set to run until June 2026, now finds himself a free agent.
The decision follows months of uncertainty surrounding Aholou’s future, largely shaped by injury concerns and a lack of consistent playing time.
Since sustaining a muscle injury in February, the midfielder has not featured in a competitive match, with his last appearance coming on January 29.
This prolonged absence contributed significantly to the breakdown in his role within the team.
Aholou’s tenure at Espérance began in January 2024 following a move from Moroccan side Raja Casablanca.
Despite early promise and a decent run of form, including 36 appearances across all competitions, 2 goals, and 3 assists, his impact was ultimately curtailed by injury.
He nonetheless played a part in the club’s 2024–25 league title campaign, but his absence in the second half of the season raised concerns about his future contribution.
“Roger Aholou has officially turned the page on his adventure with Espérance Sportive de Tunis,” a source close to the club confirmed, highlighting that the decision to part ways was reached amicably.
Another significant factor in Aholou’s departure was his exclusion from Espérance’s squad for the upcoming 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
This omission, in combination with the Tunisian Football Federation’s regulation limiting the number of foreign players to six per match, may have influenced the club’s willingness to release him.
Now unattached, Aholou must swiftly assess his next move in the summer transfer market.
Reports suggest that Moroccan outfit FUS Rabat is closely monitoring his availability, offering a potential return to familiar territory where he once thrived.
“FUS Rabat is closely monitoring his situation,” a source added, though no formal offer has yet been confirmed.
Despite his advancing age and recent fitness issues, Aholou remains an experienced campaigner, with his market value still listed at €1 million on Transfermarkt.
However, the lack of alternative suitors could make the coming weeks critical as he seeks to avoid an extended period without a club.
Aholou, who began his career at ASEC Mimosas and also featured in France and Morocco before arriving in Tunisia, now faces a pivotal moment.
His departure from Espérance closes a chapter that began with high expectations but ended in frustration.
Whether his next move brings a revival remains to be seen.
