Standard Liège are in advanced talks to secure the signing of Togolese international defender Josué Homawoo, as the Belgian club looks to reinforce its backline ahead of the new season.
The 26-year-old centre-back, known for his physical presence and left-footed balance, has emerged as a prime target for Standard following his steady development in Romanian football.
Sources close to the negotiations suggest an agreement is nearing completion, with only final details left to resolve before the deal can be made official.
Homawoo began his footballing journey at FC Nantes, where he rose through the youth ranks and eventually made a single Ligue 1 appearance.
Despite promising signs during his time in the French academy system, he struggled to break into the first team and subsequently moved on in search of regular playing time.
Following a brief stint with Lorient’s reserve squad, Homawoo dropped into France’s third tier, signing with Red Star FC in the Championnat National.
There, he found more consistency and visibility, attracting interest from abroad. It was Romanian side Dinamo București who eventually took the chance on the defender, bringing him in two years ago.
His time in Romania proved transformative. At Dinamo, Homawoo developed into a commanding presence at the heart of the defence.
His reliability and leadership earned him a regular starting role, and his performances did not go unnoticed by international selectors.
In March, he earned his first call-up to the Togolese national team and played every minute of the two World Cup qualifying fixtures — a significant milestone in his professional career.
Standard Liège, looking to add depth and experience to their defensive line, identified Homawoo as a suitable fit for their tactical setup.
His left-footed profile is seen as an asset in building play from the back, while his international experience adds an element of maturity to a squad preparing for a demanding campaign.
Though not yet officially confirmed, negotiations are understood to be at an advanced stage. The Belgian Pro League side is hopeful of finalising terms in the coming days, allowing Homawoo to join the squad ahead of pre-season preparations.
For Homawoo, the move represents both a reward for perseverance and an opportunity to compete at a higher level.
From the challenges of breaking into Ligue 1, to the grind of third-tier football, and now to potential Belgian top-flight action, his career trajectory reflects resilience and quiet determination.
Should the transfer be completed, it would mark another important step for the Togolese national team as well, with one of its rising defenders gaining experience in a more competitive European league.
His continued progress will be closely monitored by Togo’s coaching staff as they build toward upcoming qualification campaigns.
Standard Liège fans, meanwhile, will be hoping the incoming defender can bring stability and presence to their back line — and perhaps become one of the standout acquisitions of their summer window.
