Togolese defender Josué Homawoo joins Standard Liège on two-year deal

Togolese defender Josué Homawoo joins Standard Liège on two-year deal

Josué Homawoo has officially signed with Belgian side Standard Liège, agreeing to a two-year contract with an option to extend for an additional season.

The 27-year-old Togolese international joins the Belgian Pro League club after completing a spell with Romanian outfit Dinamo Bucharest, where he played from 2023 to 2025.

Standard confirmed the deal as part of their ongoing efforts to reinforce the squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Born in Lomé, Togo, on 12 November 1997, Homawoo began his football journey in France, progressing through the youth academy at FC Nantes before making his professional debut with the club.

He later had spells with FC Lorient and Red Star FC, gradually building a reputation as a reliable and commanding presence in defence.

His most recent stint in Romania further showcased his consistency and maturity on the pitch.

Speaking after completing his move to Standard Liège, Homawoo expressed his excitement about the next step in his career. “I am very happy to begin this new chapter,” the defender said.

“Standard Liège is a club with a rich history, great supporters, and strong ambitions. I’m looking forward to contributing to the team and helping achieve our goals.”

Standard’s sporting director praised the arrival of the Togolese defender, highlighting his versatility, leadership qualities, and experience across different leagues. The club sees Homawoo as an important addition to strengthen their defensive line, offering both depth and reliability as they prepare for a challenging season domestically and in European competitions.

Homawoo’s arrival aligns with Standard Liège’s ongoing strategy of blending experienced professionals with emerging talents to create a balanced and competitive squad.

The Belgian side has been active in the transfer market this summer, looking to rebuild after an inconsistent campaign and push for a stronger finish in the Pro League standings.

For Homawoo, the move to Belgium represents a significant opportunity to showcase his abilities in one of Europe’s more competitive leagues.

Having accumulated valuable experience in France’s Ligue 2, the Championnat National, and Romania’s Liga I, the Togolese centre-back brings a wealth of international and club-level exposure to his new team.

The defender’s career has been marked by steady progress, moving from youth setups into professional senior football while demonstrating a strong work ethic and commitment to improvement.

His performances have also earned him recognition at international level with the Togolese national team, where he continues to be an important figure.

Standard Liège is expected to officially present Homawoo to the media in the coming days, with the player set to join pre-season training immediately.

Fans will be eager to see how quickly the new signing adapts to his surroundings and integrates into the team’s defensive setup.

With this latest addition, Standard continues to underline their commitment to strengthening key areas of the squad as they aim to return to the upper echelons of Belgian football.

Homawoo’s signing not only adds defensive stability but also reinforces the club’s ambitions for the seasons ahead.
