Togo’s Abraw Calmadine Eyes Strong Comeback With Free State Stars
Togolese international Abraw Calmadine has returned to pre-season training with South African club Free State Stars, looking to bounce back after a challenging campaign in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The 23-year-old forward, who spent part of his off-season in Lomé, has been back with the squad for the past two weeks.
“Yes, I have been back with my club for two weeks,” Abraw confirmed in an interview with our editorial team on Friday.
Last season proved difficult for the former Châteauroux player, who was deployed out of position in midfield due to a spate of injuries among the team’s regular central players. The tactical shift impacted his performance and limited his influence in front of goal.
“I intend to give it my all this season. I’ve spoken with the coaching staff about returning to my preferred position up front,” he explained. “We’re now awaiting the arrival of our new Belgian coach, who will join us for training starting July 6.”
Free State Stars are targeting a revitalised campaign after a disappointing previous season. The PSL resumes on August 9, with the Stars set to face last season’s runners-up, Kaizer Chiefs, in their opening fixture. Abraw remains hopeful for a strong start, buoyed by promising transfer activity.
“We had a tough year last season, so we’re doing everything we can to avoid making the same mistakes,” he said. “We’ve strengthened the squad with key signings—bringing in a Burkinabe goalkeeper and defender who both played in the last African Cup of Nations, and a Gabonese right-back expected to join tomorrow.”
The team is scheduled to depart for a 25-day training camp aimed at sharpening fitness and team cohesion ahead of the season opener.
Abraw, known as “Camal” among friends and teammates, joined Free State Stars last year. Son of former Togo national team coach Abraw Samer, the forward previously played in France for Châteauroux, Les Herbiers, and Cherbourg, and also had stints in Bulgaria and Morocco. He is set to celebrate his 24th birthday on August 15.
With a new coach, fresh signings, and a clear desire to return to form, Abraw and his teammates will be aiming to restore the club’s competitive edge in the upcoming season.
