Abraw Camaldine Builds Momentum Ahead of South African Soccer League Kickoff
Togolese international Abraw Camaldine is showing promising form as Free State Stars prepare for the new South African Premier Soccer League season. The forward has impressed during six preseason friendlies, scoring three goals and providing two assists, boosting confidence within the Bethlehem-based club.
Camaldine’s strong performances come as a welcome sign for the team’s coaching staff, determined to improve upon a disappointing previous campaign. Playing in his preferred attacking role, the former Châteauroux player expressed satisfaction with his current form, stating, “I’m playing well up front.”
This positional shift aligns with the arrival of Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet, who has taken charge of Free State Stars ahead of the season’s August 9 start. The team is set to play two more warm-up matches, including a notable fixture against league runners-up Kaizer Chiefs.
Camaldine joined Free State Stars last year and brings with him diverse experience from stints in France—at Châteauroux, Herbiers, and Cherbourg—as well as spells in Bulgaria and Morocco. Known affectionately as “Camal” among friends, he will celebrate his 24th birthday on August 15, as he looks to make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
