Togo Clubs Return to Action in Sport FM Anniversary Tournament
After a long hiatus since the conclusion of the 2014–2015 season last November, clubs from Togo’s first and second divisions are finally set to return to competition. The occasion? A special tournament organized to mark the 14th anniversary of Radio Sport FM.
The tournament, which kicks off this Saturday, will see some of the country’s top-tier and second-division sides square off in an event aimed at reviving competitive play and preparing clubs for the possible resumption of the national league.
The opening match will feature a compelling clash between AS Togo Port of the first division and Boundja de Kara, representing the second division.
Speaking after the live draw on a Togolese sports TV channel, Franck Nugnama, president of the organizing committee, emphasized the event’s significance:
“These are exciting matchups, especially the opener. It’s the kind of fixture that draws people to the stadium. The clubs were expecting something of this level, and now they have the chance to showcase themselves.”
He also pointed to the physical preparedness of some teams, such as Dynamique Togolais (Dyto) and ASFOSA, who have maintained training and played friendlies during the break.
“But football is unpredictable,” he added. “The best-prepared team doesn’t always win. We simply want to celebrate the game and deliver a good show.”
Nugnama highlighted that this competition, held annually, allows teams to test players, refine tactics, and build cohesion ahead of the domestic season. It also showcases Sport FM’s commitment to supporting Togolese football beyond broadcasting.
The defending champions, Agaza of Lomé, will begin their title defense against Gomido of Kpalimé in another key fixture.
