The 24th day of the Togolese football championship is at risk of facing a significant disruption as referees, represented by ANAFOOT (National Association of Football Referees of Togo), threaten to boycott the matches scheduled for October 9 and October 13, 2013. In a press release, ANAFOOT announced that its members will not respond to any designations for these matches.
The referees’ decision is motivated by the recent surge in violence observed in Togo’s D1 stadiums in the preceding weeks. The acts of violence often targeted officials and players, casting doubt on the integrity of the matches. The Togolese Football Federation (FTF) had recently temporarily suspended the Sokodé and Lavié stadiums due to incidents resulting in injuries and material damage.
ANAFOOT expressed regret that despite firm warnings jointly issued by the Ministry of Security and Sports, acts of violence persisted during the 23rd day of the championship.
In response to this situation, the Togolese football federation is attempting to address the issue, holding a meeting at its headquarters to find a resolution. The potential referee boycott poses a significant challenge to the smooth progress of the football championship in Togo.
