Togo’s football community is in mourning following the death of international goalkeeper Bassa Djeri, who passed away at the age of 37 after a reported illness.

The news has cast a sombre shadow over the nation’s sporting landscape. More than just a footballer, Djeri was widely regarded as a symbol of determination, resilience, and national pride.

His passing has left a profound void among teammates, fans, and all who admired his commitment to the game and to Togo.

Born on 17 June 1987, Bassa Djeri rose through the ranks of Togolese football to become a prominent figure at both domestic and international levels.

He began his professional journey with Gbikinti FC, a club based in Bassar, where his talent between the posts quickly elevated him to the position of first-choice goalkeeper. His standout performances at club level soon caught the attention of national team selectors.

Djeri’s international career took flight in 2017 when he earned his first cap for the Togo national team, known as the Éperviers. Over the following years, he became a dependable presence in goal, making 15 appearances for his country.

His calm under pressure and consistency earned him the respect of teammates and fans alike, as well as recognition across the African football scene.

Beyond Togo’s borders, Djeri also made his mark in club football abroad. He played for Coton Sport, one of Cameroon’s most prestigious clubs, and later joined Nigerian powerhouse Enyimba FC.

His time in both leagues showcased his adaptability and professionalism, further cementing his reputation as a top-tier goalkeeper in West and Central Africa.

While his career was defined by excellence on the pitch, those who knew Djeri personally also speak of a man whose humility, leadership, and love for the sport left a lasting impact.

His teammates often described him as a unifying force in the dressing room, someone who brought both experience and encouragement to younger players.

The Togolese Football Federation and many across the African football community have expressed their condolences. Tributes have poured in, highlighting not only his athletic achievements but also the kindness and integrity he brought to the game.

In a statement, Africa Top Sports extended its deepest sympathies to Djeri’s family and the wider Togolese football fraternity.

Bassa Sabirou Djeri leaves behind a legacy of courage and service to sport that will long be remembered. His contributions to Togolese football have secured him a place in the hearts of fans and in the history of the game.

May he rest in peace.
