Togo to Compete in Mauritius Tournament with Interim Local Coach
Unlike last year, Togo’s national football team will be active during the upcoming FIFA international break at the end of March. The Hawks are set to participate in a four-nation tournament in Mauritius, alongside Rwanda, Burundi, and the host nation, as confirmed by Africa Top Sports.
While anticipation builds for these matches, Togo will not be led by a permanent head coach during this window. Instead, a local interim coach will take charge, the Normalization Committee’s president, Antoine Folly, announced on national television.
“We have received many applications without having launched a call for applications. We have not yet made a choice, contrary to what is being said in the media,” Folly clarified.
The committee plans to recruit an expatriate head coach only after the FIFA Days. For now, discussions are ongoing to appoint an assistant coach from Togo to handle the team during the upcoming matches.
“We have roughly retained the name of the assistant coach… We will ask the Togolese assistant, as soon as the discussions are conclusive, to lead the team on an interim basis,” said Folly.
As for a long-term vision, the committee is considering a coaching duo:
“We have suggested to the public authorities that we put in place a tandem composed of an experienced expatriate coach, but with whom we would associate this Togolese assistant… so as to be able to take over in one or two years,” added Folly.
Among the names being floated for this setup is Abalo Dosseh, former Togo international and widely respected within the national football community.
Togo’s matches in Mauritius will serve as crucial preparation ahead of AFCON 2017 qualifiers, and the temporary coaching structure is seen as a transitional phase before a more structured technical bench is finalized.
