Togo Launches TLS/Elite Cup to Boost Domestic Football Revival
Lomé, Togo – Following the successful conclusion of the Sport FM Tournament, Togo is set to host a new football competition aimed at maintaining competitive momentum among local clubs. The inaugural TLS/Elite Cup Tournament kicks off on Friday, September 18 in Lomé, providing a much-needed platform for teams who have been without official championship football for nearly a year.
The competition is a collaboration between TéléSport, Togo’s first sports-dedicated television channel, and Elite Sport, a local sports event management agency. It is named in recognition of the growing role of media and event partnerships in promoting grassroots and semi-professional football in the country.
The tournament will feature eight teams, comprising clubs from Togo’s first and second divisions, as well as prominent football training academies. The quarter-final draw, held earlier this week, has set up several intriguing encounters.
Quarter-Final Fixtures
Friday, September 18:
Gomido (D2) vs CDS Olufade (Training Centre)
Shooting Star (D2) vs Etecon (Training Centre)
Saturday, September 19:
AS Togo Port (D1) vs ASFOSA (D2)
Agaza (D1) vs JCA (Jeunesse Club d’Agoenyivé – Training Centre)
AS Togo Port, who recently lifted the Sport FM Tournament trophy, will be looking to continue their strong form as they take on ASFOSA. Meanwhile, Agaza’s clash with JCA promises to be a showcase of raw talent and tactical ambition.
The semi-finals are scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, with the third-place match set for September 26. The tournament will culminate in the grand final on Sunday, September 27.
Adding to the festival of football, the final day will feature a women’s football exhibition match between two of the top women’s clubs in Togo: Athleta and CECO Dauphines. The inclusion of the women’s game reflects growing interest in promoting gender inclusivity in Togolese football.
An Alternative Platform for Competitive Action
With Togo’s national championship suspended for almost a year due to administrative and logistical challenges, tournaments like the TLS/Elite Cup and the earlier Sport FM competition are serving as vital stopgaps. They ensure clubs maintain match fitness and keep players engaged at a competitive level while awaiting the return of full league action.
Organisers hope that this initiative will not only entertain fans but also support the continued development of local football infrastructure and talent.
