Togo: FTF Extraordinary Congress Postponed Following Arrest of President Gabriel Ameyi
The extraordinary congress of the Togolese Football Federation (FTF), initially scheduled for December 6 in Kpalimé, has been postponed until further notice, sources close to the federation have confirmed. The postponement follows the arrest of FTF president Gabriel Ameyi, who was taken into custody on Thursday night upon his return from Malabo, where he had attended the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations draw.
Ameyi, who was expected to preside over the congress, spent another night in detention at the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police (DCVPJ) in Lomé. While official details of the arrest remain unconfirmed, local media reports suggest that he is being investigated for fraud and breach of trust involving a Beninese businessman.
As this dramatic development unfolded, FIFA officials were in Lomé, holding consultations with various Togolese football stakeholders amid a deepening leadership crisis. A number of these stakeholders have openly challenged Ameyi’s legitimacy as president of the FTF, further complicating the already tense situation.
The congress was intended to elect members of the Electoral Commission and Appeals Committee, essential steps toward organizing an elective congress that would shape the future leadership of Togolese football. With Ameyi’s arrest casting a shadow over the process, the path forward for FTF governance remains uncertain.
