Togo defender Izak Akakpo calls for maximum effort in Burundi opener

Togo begin their Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying campaign against Burundi on Friday, 25 September, with defender Izak Akakpo urging his team-mates to maintain their recent progress and focus on securing victory.

The Lorient central defender said the Togo squad were approaching the opening fixture with confidence and determination after positive performances during their last two international gatherings.

“We know how important it is. It is an important match for qualification, but we are in a good state of mind,” Akakpo said.

“I think the last two gatherings were encouraging and we will continue in the same direction so that we can go and get the victory against Burundi and Zambia.”

Togo face a challenging qualifying group that also includes Algeria and Zambia. Akakpo believes the team must remain disciplined and apply the same level of commitment in every match, regardless of the opposition.

The defender said the players should avoid becoming distracted by the reputation or identity of their opponents and instead concentrate on delivering their best performance.

“I think above all we need to focus on ourselves. We have to give our maximum, no matter who the opponent is,” he said.

“Qualification will be difficult, whether it is against Burundi, Algeria or Zambia. We will therefore have to give our maximum and go out to get the victory in the end.”

The match against Burundi represents the first step in Togo’s bid to reach the Africa Cup of Nations 2027. Akakpo’s message to the squad is that a strong collective approach will be required throughout the campaign as the Eperviers seek a positive start.
