Amid growing calls for his resignation following Togo’s elimination from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, coach Claude Le Roy remains confident about his future with the national team. In an exclusive interview with Canal+ International during the Benin-Togo match, the Frenchman emphasized that he is ready to continue if asked.
“I have never clung to a position. But if it’s to hear the word ‘resignation’ coming out of my mouth, it’s not going to come out anytime soon because I will never utter it,” Le Roy said. He added, “I am not the decision-maker. I do not decide my future.”
When questioned about his willingness to continue, Le Roy was clear: “If I am asked, yes, because there is still a tremendous job to be done in this country.” His remarks signal that, despite the recent disappointment, he remains committed to the development of Togolese football and sees work still to be done with the national team.
The controversy dates back to November 2018, when the former Congo coach announced that Togo’s 1-4 defeat to Algeria would determine his tenure: “It will logically be the end of my contract” if the Hawks failed to qualify in March. Since the elimination in Cotonou, the media has frequently cited this statement, fueling speculation over Le Roy’s future.
The Togolese Football Federation (FTF) has largely stayed silent on the issue, refraining from public comment about the coach’s status. In a statement released on March 26th, the FTF noted, “The Executive Committee will take the necessary time to conduct a comprehensive review of our performance and draw the necessary lessons. Furthermore, it appeals to all stakeholders to ensure that this setback does not deter us from our commitment to a brighter future for our football.”
For now, Le Roy appears determined to remain focused on his mission, leaving the decision over his future to the federation while reaffirming his desire to continue contributing to Togolese football.
