On the sidelines of the 2019 Graines du Togo competition final in Lomé, French coach Claude Le Roy was pressed by the media about his future with the Togolese national team. True to form, the experienced tactician remained deliberately evasive.
“I am in Togo, I am still the coach of the Hawks. For how much longer? I don’t know, I don’t read oracles, I’m not a fortune teller or a sorcerer. I continue to work, as evidenced by today,” Le Roy stated, underlining his focus on the present rather than speculation.
Addressing recent reports suggesting his contract was nearing its end, Le Roy clarified: “I am not at the end of my contract at the moment. I still have a few months left on my contract. But contracts are made to end or be renewed. My personal concerns are not the most important; what matters is Togolese football.” His comments highlighted his commitment to the development of football in the country, regardless of his own tenure.
Le Roy, who previously managed Ghana, had already indicated that he was not yet ready to make a decision about his future. Despite Togo’s early elimination from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, he did not rule out remaining in his role as head coach of the Hawks. His measured responses suggest a coach intent on focusing on the present work and the broader interests of Togolese football rather than personal speculation.
With Le Roy at the helm, Togo continues to rely on his wealth of experience to nurture the national team, even as questions about his future persist.
