Togo has honored Emmanuel Adebayor, its most celebrated footballer, in a lasting tribute: a street in Lomé, the capital, has been named “ADÉBAYOR STREET”. The gesture delighted the Istanbul Basaksehir striker, who expressed his gratitude on social media.
“I know the Togolese people have supported me and are grateful for my service to the nation. But this is too much; I couldn’t believe it when I saw it. A street in Togo has been named after me… This is no small thing; history has been made. Just as this symbol will remain, I promise to keep you in my heart forever. I am truly honored. Thank you,” Adebayor wrote.
Adebayor remains Togo’s only African Ballon d’Or winner and boasts a career at some of Europe’s top clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Tottenham. The street naming recognizes not only his sporting achievements but also his status as a national icon.
