Olympique Marseille have completed the signing of Nigerian defensive midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi from Belgian side Zulte Waregem in a deal worth €6.00m. The 22-year-old joins the Ligue 1 club with a current market value of €2.00m and will play under contract from 2026-02-02 to 2029-06-30.

Nnadi arrives in Marseille as a specialist defensive midfielder, listed primarily in the holding role at the base of midfield. He has been handed the number 6 shirt, underlining the expectation that he will operate in front of the backline and provide protection and balance in the centre of the pitch. The move also confirms his status as a fully established expatriate professional, continuing his career abroad rather than in his home country, Nigeria, and placing him in one of Europe’s most demanding top flights.

The transfer marks the latest step in a rapid ascent through European football. Born in Ihiagwa, Nigeria, and standing 1.76 m tall, Nnadi first appeared on the radar in Bulgaria, where he joined Botev Plovdiv II in 2021 after leaving an unknown club. He moved up to Botev Plovdiv’s first team in 2022, then switched to Zulte Waregem in Belgium in early 2024. From those beginnings in the Bulgarian setup, he now finds himself contracted to one of France’s leading clubs.

His market value chart reflects that progression: from €10,000 at Botev Plovdiv II in late 2021 to €50,000, then €100,000 and €200,000 as he broke through at Botev Plovdiv, before rising to €700,000 and then €900,000. A subsequent spell at Zulte Waregem saw temporary dips and rises, with values of €900,000, €600,000, €500,000 and €400,000, before a sharp climb to €800,000 and finally €2.00m in late 2025. Marseille have therefore committed a €6.00m fee for a player whose valuation has grown steadily as he has adapted to higher levels of competition.

Nnadi’s senior career has taken him through Bulgaria’s top flight with Botev Plovdiv, where he played in the First League, and then into Belgian football with Zulte Waregem, who have competed in the Jupiler Pro League. The move to Marseille places him firmly in Ligue 1, a step up in profile and intensity, and extends his sequence of playing in foreign leagues rather than returning to the Nigerian domestic scene.

For Zulte Waregem, the transfer means the loss of a central midfield option and the potential need to find a replacement in the defensive midfield area or promote from within. Botev Plovdiv and Botev Plovdiv II, his earlier European clubs, will now see a former player competing at a higher international level, underlining the effectiveness of their development pathways.

Because Nnadi is secured on a contract running from 2026-02-02 to 2029-06-30, there is no immediate prospect of him becoming a free agent. However, the structure and length of the deal mean that his contractual situation will naturally become a talking point closer to its expiry, particularly if his market value continues to rise in Ligue 1.

As a right-footed defensive midfielder, his role at Marseille is likely to focus on screening the defence, recovering possession and initiating transitions from deep areas. His previous experience in Bulgaria and Belgium suggests he has already adapted to different tactical environments and styles of play, which may aid his integration into French football.

From a Nigerian perspective, Nnadi’s move reinforces the ongoing pattern of national talents building their careers across Europe’s leagues. While he is not moving from a Nigerian club, his continued presence abroad maintains a link between Nigerian football and elite European competitions. For Marseille, the signing represents an investment in a relatively young, developing midfielder with room for growth as a Ligue 1 regular.

The coming seasons in France will determine how far Nnadi can push on from a promising, steadily rising career trajectory to becoming a key figure in a major European league, and whether his time at Marseille will set up an even bigger move once his current contract approaches its end date of 2029-06-30.
