Tobi Akinyimika: England-Nigeria midfielder steps up from Watford U18 to U21 side
England and Nigeria youth midfielder Tobi Akinyimika has moved up from Watford U18 to join the club’s U21 squad, marking a key step in his progression through the Hornets’ academy system.
The 18-year-old central midfielder makes the intra-club switch as part of his transition into development football, leaving the under-18 set-up to link up with the Premier League 2 age group. The move formalises his promotion and places him closer to first-team contention at the Championship club.
Akinyimika, who is comfortable operating in the centre of the pitch, has been part of Watford’s youth ranks and now advances to a level where he will face older, more physically experienced opposition on a regular basis. The change in squad status is a standard pathway for academy players viewed as ready to test themselves at a higher age category.
The dual-national midfielder will now be eligible to feature in U21 fixtures and training, offering him exposure to a more tactical and physically demanding environment than at under-18 level. The step up also aligns with the club’s structure, where standout U18 performers are moved into the U21 group as they move towards professional senior opportunities.
Akinyimika’s move from Watford U18 to Watford U21 is effective immediately and confirms his promotion into the club’s higher development squad.
