Durban City coach Eric Tinkler says reaching the CAF Confederation Cup group stages is a significant milestone after his side completed a 6-1 aggregate victory over AS Port-Louis 2000.
The Citizens secured their place in the next phase by producing another convincing display against the Mauritian outfit in the second preliminary round.
Tinkler was pleased with the focus shown by his players, particularly after Durban City had established a strong advantage in the first leg. He said the team travelled knowing the tie still required a professional performance.
“I’m very pleased with the performance. We came here knowing we had a job to do, despite winning the first leg, and the players approached the game with the right mentality,” said Tinkler.
The coach highlighted Durban City’s discipline, efficiency in attack and ability to control the match as key factors in their success.
“We were disciplined, clinical in front of goal and managed the game well.
“This is a very important achievement for Durban City FC. It’s our first-ever continental campaign, and reaching the group stages is a proud moment for the Club, the players, the technical team and everyone who has supported us. We’re delighted, but we also know there is more work ahead.”
Durban City will now return their attention to domestic competition, with Stellenbosch next in their schedule.
The sides will meet in the Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday.
