After a season on loan at AC Milan, Tiémoué Bakayoko will return to Chelsea, with the Italian club opting not to exercise the €35 million buyout clause. The Ivorian midfielder, under contract with the Blues until June 2022, will rejoin Stamford Bridge as Chelsea prepare for the new Premier League and Champions League campaigns.
Bakayoko, 25, made 31 appearances for AC Milan in the 2018-2019 season, scoring once. Despite a solid campaign, the Serie A side decided against a permanent transfer, allowing him to resume his career in London. His return comes after several seasons of loan moves across Europe, offering him an opportunity to seek stability and regular playing time.
Abdoulaye Bakayoko, his brother and agent, confirmed Chelsea as the preferred destination. “Some big clubs made inquiries, but we are giving priority to Chelsea. They offer Champions League football and stability. Tiémoué has decided to stay,” he said.
During his time in Italy, Bakayoko gained valuable experience in a tactically demanding league, showcasing his physicality, defensive awareness, and ball-carrying ability. Though his Milan stint did not lead to a permanent move, it helped him regain confidence and consistency after a challenging period of loans.
Chelsea, currently banned from permanent transfers, will welcome Bakayoko as an important midfield reinforcement. His experience in Ligue 1, Serie A, and the Premier League, combined with familiarity with Stamford Bridge and top-level managers, positions him as a valuable asset for domestic and European competitions.
Bakayoko’s return marks a pivotal stage in his career, offering him the chance to reassert himself in one of Europe’s toughest leagues and contribute significantly to Chelsea’s ambitions in the coming season.
