Inter Milan scored twice in the closing stages to beat Fiorentina 2-1 on Sunday and move level on points with Lazio at the top of Serie A.
Fiorentina appeared set for victory after Alex Jimenez opened the scoring in the 65th minute with a powerful strike that Inter goalkeeper could only watch as it flew into the net.
Marcus Thuram brought Inter level in the 90th minute before Piotr Zielinski completed the comeback by converting a penalty in the eighth minute of added time.
The result gave Inter their seventh win in eight league matches. They have also drawn once and now sit on 22 points, level with Lazio, with a superior goal difference after the weekend’s fixtures.
Thuram’s equaliser had added significance beyond rescuing a point for the home side. The France forward became only the third Inter player to score in at least seven consecutive home Serie A matches since the introduction of three points for a win.
According to Opta, Thuram has joined Romelu Lukaku and Christian Vieri on that list. Lukaku scored in seven successive home league games for Inter in 2021, while Vieri holds the club record after finding the net in 11 consecutive home matches in 2003.
Fiorentina’s difficult start to the season continued at San Siro. They remain on four points after suffering their sixth defeat in eight matches, alongside one win and one draw.
The visitors’ lead came when Jimenez produced a precise long-range effort in the 65th minute, giving Fiorentina hope of only their second league victory of the campaign.
Inter responded late, with Thuram’s shot finally beating Fiorentina’s defence and goalkeeper to restore parity. Zielinski then ensured the hosts collected all three points when he kept his composure from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time.
The victory maintains Inter’s perfect home scoring sequence in the context of Thuram’s record, while also keeping them alongside Lazio at the summit after eight rounds of the Italian top flight.
