Three new Orlando Pirates signings announce themselves in Spain as Cádiz victory sparks excitement

Orlando Pirates’ new recruits wasted no time making their mark as the Buccaneers produced an impressive comeback victory over Spanish Segunda Division side Cádiz CF during their pre-season camp in Marbella.

The Soweto giants recovered from an early setback at the Marbella Football Center to secure a 2-1 win, with goals from Tshepang Moremi and Daniel Msendami completing the turnaround.

However, beyond the result, attention was drawn to three of Orlando Pirates’ newest arrivals, who delivered promising performances and offered supporters an early glimpse of their potential ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.

Among the standout performers was 21-year-old Simphiwe Masilela, who controlled proceedings in the attacking midfield role and looked comfortable against experienced Spanish opposition.

The Ermelo-born midfielder showed confidence in possession, constantly looking to break lines with progressive passes and creating problems for the Cádiz defence with his movement and vision.

Masilela’s ability to operate in tight spaces and his willingness to take responsibility in possession stood out throughout the contest. He also won a dangerous free-kick just outside the penalty area in the second half after being brought down while driving forward.

The midfielder earned his chance with the senior team after playing a key role in Orlando Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge title-winning campaign, helping the reserve side secure their first-ever league crown before making the step up.

New signings provide midfield depth

Another player who caught the eye was Matome Mmolai, who delivered a composed performance in the middle of the park.

The 23-year-old midfielder showed maturity beyond his years, connecting defence and attack while maintaining possession under pressure from the Spanish side.

Mmolai’s ability to remain calm when pressed allowed Pirates to build from midfield and maintain control during key phases of the match.

The midfielder joined the Buccaneers from Leicesterford City in June after previously gaining recognition through his performances for JDR Stars in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

His display in Spain suggested he could provide valuable depth and competition in a midfield department expected to play a crucial role during the new campaign.

Mthetheleli Mthiyane also added to the positive impression created by Pirates’ new arrivals.

The Richards Bay-born midfielder came on as a second-half substitute and initially endured a difficult introduction before settling into the match and producing a disciplined showing.

Operating in a deeper midfield role, Mthiyane used his physical strength effectively to disrupt Cádiz’s attacks and shield the defence as the Spanish side searched for an equaliser.

The 24-year-old arrived from Stellenbosch FC on a three-year contract following an outstanding season that earned him a Bafana Bafana call-up and a Player of the Season nomination.

The trio’s performances will provide encouragement for head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou as Pirates continue fine-tuning their squad ahead of the new season.

After overcoming Cádiz, the Buccaneers will face another stern test when they take on Saudi Pro League giants Al-Ittihad Club on Tuesday, July 21, as part of their Marbella preparations.
