Thomas Reis appointed Trabzonspor head coach after leaving Ludogorets

Trabzonspor have appointed German coach Thomas Reis as their new head coach, with the former Ludogorets manager set to take charge of Mohamed Salah and lead the Turkish club against Galatasaray on Saturday.

The club announced Reis’ appointment on Thursday and said a signing ceremony would be held at Barbara Park stadium later that evening.

Reis previously worked with Hossam Abdelmeguid during his time at Ludogorets. He has now left the Bulgarian club to take over at Trabzonspor, where he will work with Salah.

Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan revealed that Reis had personally offered to have the compensation fee owed to Ludogorets deducted from his salary.

“Thomas Reis asked for the compensation fee that will be paid to Ludogorets to be deducted from his salary,” Dogan told A Spor.

“Reis was supposed to receive a salary of 1.5m euros, but he will receive 1m euros after this amount is deducted from his wages.”

Dogan added: “Thomas asked for this himself and insisted on it.”

Reis also held a meeting with Salah before his appointment was formally confirmed. Turkish newspapers published a photograph of the pair together ahead of the announcement.

Dogan has said Salah is “extremely happy” at Trabzonspor, in contrast to reports published by the Istanbul press.

Reis is expected to sign a contract lasting one season, with an option to extend it for a further campaign. His first match in charge will come against Galatasaray on Saturday.

The 51-year-old has previous experience of Turkish football, having managed Samsunspor.

Trabzonspor began their search for a new head coach after Fatih Tekke left his position. Reis’ arrival brings him back into a managerial role following his spell with Ludogorets, where Abdelmeguid had played under him since joining the Bulgarian side from Zamalek in the summer.
