Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is in discussions with the club over a contract extension, with his family reportedly eager for him to remain in London.
The 31-year-old Ghanaian international’s current deal is set to expire this summer, potentially allowing him to leave on a free transfer.
Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020 for £45 million, has expressed happiness at the club, and his family is enjoying life in the English capital.
He is open to either a two-year contract or a one-year deal with an option for an additional year, per The Athletic.
Despite interest from clubs in Spain and Saudi Arabia offering more lucrative terms, Partey is seriously considering staying at Arsenal, where he has grown into a pivotal member of Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Arsenal’s policy generally restricts players over 30 to shorter deals, often structured as one-year contracts with an optional extension.
However, manager Mikel Arteta is understood to be strongly in favour of keeping Partey, particularly as fellow midfielder Jorginho is expected to leave the club at the end of his current deal.
Arteta is also eyeing further reinforcements, including Real Sociedad’s Martín Zubimendi, to strengthen the midfield.
Partey has played a crucial role in Arsenal’s progress since his arrival, despite periods on the sidelines due to injury.
His leadership, experience, and versatility have been valuable assets, and his recent return to form has further boosted his standing within the team.
This season, he has contributed significantly across competitions and is viewed as a reliable presence when fit.
He is set to miss the first leg of Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain next week but is expected to be available for the return leg on May 7.
While formal agreements have yet to be reached, both Partey’s camp and Arsenal are optimistic that a deal can be finalised to extend his stay at the Emirates beyond the current campaign.
