They have given the world a reason never to take AFCON seriously – Eto’o slams CAF’s decision to strip Senegal of AFCON title
Samuel Eto’o has launched a scathing attack on the Confederation of African Football following its controversial decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.
The Cameroon Football Federation president questioned the credibility of the ruling by the Confederation of African Football, suggesting it has damaged the reputation of the continent’s flagship competition.
“They have given the world a reason to never take AFCON seriously. How will you lose a final and win it two months later?” he said.
The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker insisted that, regardless of the official verdict, the reality on the pitch cannot be erased.
“The whole world knows the real winners. Senegal have proof that they won the AFCON,” Eto’o added.
Eto’o’s comments add to growing pressure on CAF, as stakeholders across African football continue to question the integrity and consistency of the decision-making process.
The controversy has already sparked strong reactions from Senegal, with officials and supporters maintaining that the team rightfully earned its title on the field.
As debate intensifies, Eto’o’s intervention underscores a widening concern that the handling of the situation could have lasting implications for the credibility and global perception of African football.
