It is now official: Theo Bongonda has completed his move from Zulte Waregem to Belgian champions Genk. The 23-year-old winger has signed a four-year contract with Genk, marking a historic transfer between two Belgian clubs. The deal, valued at €7 million, represents the largest domestic transfer in Belgium to date, highlighting both Bongonda’s talent and Genk’s ambition to strengthen their squad.
Bongonda enjoyed an impressive season with Zulte Waregem, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists across all competitions. His productivity on the wing, combining pace, dribbling, and precise finishing, has made him one of the standout performers in the Belgian Pro League. These statistics underscore his ability to influence matches consistently, both by creating opportunities for teammates and by converting chances himself.
A former Belgian youth international, Bongonda began his footballing journey at Lierse, where he developed through the academy before making his professional debut. His performances caught the attention of Spanish side Celta Vigo, where he went on to feature in 77 La Liga matches. During his time in Spain, Bongonda gained valuable experience in one of Europe’s top leagues, honing his technical skills, tactical understanding, and ability to perform against high-level opposition.
After his stint in Spain, Bongonda was loaned to Trabzonspor in Turkey and subsequently to Zulte Waregem, where he impressed enough to secure a permanent move for €1.5 million. His development at Zulte Waregem culminated in a breakout season that attracted the interest of Genk, one of Belgium’s leading clubs seeking to bolster their attacking options ahead of domestic and European competitions.
Genk’s acquisition of Bongonda reflects the club’s strategic focus on adding dynamic attacking talent capable of making an immediate impact. Known for his versatility on the wing, Bongonda can operate on either flank, providing both width and penetration to Genk’s offensive play. His dribbling ability, coupled with his vision for key passes, makes him a valuable asset for a team aiming to compete for the Belgian Pro League title and pursue success in European tournaments.
The transfer also represents a significant financial step for Zulte Waregem, who have benefited from Bongonda’s development and eventual sale. The €7 million fee underscores the growing market for top-performing domestic players and highlights Bongonda’s perceived value in the Belgian football landscape. It also sets a benchmark for future transfers between Belgian clubs, demonstrating the financial potential of nurturing and showcasing talented players in the domestic league.
For Bongonda, the move to Genk offers an opportunity to take his career to the next level, compete for silverware, and gain exposure in European competitions. With a four-year contract in place, both the player and Genk are poised for a mutually beneficial partnership that could yield significant on-field success while further establishing Bongonda as one of Belgium’s premier attacking talents.
