Themba Zwane’s World Cup red card under investigation over alleged betting irregularities

South Africa captain Themba Zwane’s red card during the 2026 FIFA World Cup has reportedly come under investigation after being identified as one of several incidents flagged for potential betting irregularities.

According to The Athletic, Zwane’s dismissal in Bafana Bafana’s opening match against Mexico is among seven incidents currently being examined for possible manipulation linked to suspicious betting patterns.

The experienced midfielder was shown a straight red card after the referee ruled that he had struck a Mexico player in the face, an offence classified as violent conduct.

The decision proved costly, with Zwane receiving a three-match suspension that ruled him out of the remainder of South Africa’s group-stage campaign.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) challenged the suspension, lodging an appeal with FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee. However, the governing body rejected the appeal, allowing the ban to stand.

The case has now taken a new twist following reports that Zwane’s sending-off is being scrutinised as part of a broader investigation into unusual betting activity surrounding selected incidents at the tournament.

Other cases reportedly under review involve Spain forward Ferran Torres and United States striker Folarin Balogun.

Betting integrity expert Christian Kalb urged caution over drawing conclusions, explaining that unusual betting patterns do not necessarily indicate match manipulation.

“The Group of Copenhagen’s notices can be explained by atypical behaviours such as changes in odds or hedging liquidities, there are many explanations that are not manipulations,” Kalb told The Athletic.

“The major problem is when there may be a conflict of interest and potential inside information on those issues.

“When we speak of prediction markets, we can detect some unusual behaviours but we must be very careful as they can be used for hedging markets.”

The Group of Copenhagen has not yet released its final findings, and authorities have not disclosed the specific reasons why Zwane’s red card was flagged for further examination.

At this stage, the investigation remains ongoing, and no allegations of wrongdoing have been proven against Zwane or any of the other players whose incidents are reportedly under review.
