The transfer puzzle that could keep Julian Alvarez from Arsenal

Julian Alvarez’s increasingly difficult situation at Atletico de Madrid could lead to the striker leaving the club, but a move to Arsenal appears to be highly complicated despite being viewed as the most realistic solution to the current tension between the player and his club.

Atletico are understood to want at least €150m (£approximately) before considering Alvarez’s departure. That figure would represent an exceptional investment for Arsenal, who have significant financial strength but have not traditionally paid such sums for players arriving from outside the Premier League.

The English transfer market has increasingly encouraged major clubs to conduct their biggest business within the Premier League. Many of the most expensive deals in recent years have involved moves between English clubs, with financial and tax considerations making domestic investment more attractive.

That trend presents a further obstacle for Arsenal. In recent years, the club have not spent heavily on players recruited from abroad. Their most expensive signing from La Liga was worth €70m, while the record fee paid by an English club for a player from Spain stands at €80m.

Atletico’s valuation of Alvarez is therefore almost twice the level of those figures. Arsenal would have to take an unusually aggressive financial approach to complete the deal, particularly because they have other striker options available in the transfer market.

The proposed move is also made less appealing by England’s tax system. Domestic transfers between British clubs can offer financial advantages that are not available in the same way when a club signs a player from outside the country. For Arsenal, paying €150m to Atletico would consequently carry a heavier economic burden than a comparable deal within the British market.

The situation has left all three sides facing different pressures. Atletico appear keen to resolve the dispute surrounding Alvarez, while the Argentina forward is looking for a route away from the strained relationship. Arsenal have the financial capacity to consider the transfer, but the asking price and the structure of the English market work against them.

Alvarez’s potential move to London may therefore appear logical when viewed purely from a sporting perspective. Yet the scale of Atletico’s demand, Arsenal’s previous spending patterns on players from Spain and the financial advantages attached to domestic transfers make the proposed deal far more difficult.

Unless Arsenal are prepared to make a major exception to their recent approach in the market, Atletico’s €150m valuation could prevent the striker from moving to the Emirates Stadium. What looks like a natural escape route for Alvarez may, in practical terms, be close to impossible.
