Evra and Ménès: Has the War Finally Ended?
A surprising détente appears to have unfolded between Patrice Evra and Canal+ football analyst Pierre Ménès. Known for his sharp critiques and often candid opinions, Ménès recently took to his blog to address questions from fans — and notably commented on the renewed image of the French left-back.
Evra, who had gained a somewhat controversial reputation since the 2010 World Cup, notably for his confrontations with the media, made headlines this week by attending a press conference ahead of France’s second group match at the 2014 World Cup. Appearing relaxed and smiling, the Manchester United defender seemed to shed some of his “bad boy” aura, winning over both journalists and fans.
In his video blog, Pierre Ménès expressed cautious appreciation for Evra’s changed demeanor. “It was refreshing, which isn’t a term I thought I’d ever use with Patrice Evra,” Ménès admitted. “He seemed to be in a good mood, he was smiling, and there was no aggression in his words.”
Despite this warmer assessment, Ménès stopped short of full reconciliation, admitting he still doesn’t feel a strong connection with Evra. However, he acknowledged the defender’s role and importance to the French team moving forward. “We have to accept that he’s here… Since he’s here and he’s playing, he might as well be in a good mood, be positive, and play the best matches possible. For me, Patrice Evra’s interests come well after those of the French team.”
This change in tone comes at a critical time for France, as Les Bleus prepare to face Switzerland in a crucial World Cup Group E match tonight — a game that could significantly influence their chances of advancing to the knockout stages.
With Evra seemingly embracing a more positive role within the squad, and Ménès publicly acknowledging it, French fans may be witnessing the start of a truce that could help bring unity to a team eager to progress deep into the tournament.
