Ter Stegen’s new arrival brings joy during Ajax spell

Marc-Andre ter Stegen has announced the birth of his third child, welcoming his first daughter with his new partner, Ona Silares, while continuing his football career on loan at Ajax Amsterdam.

The Barcelona goalkeeper shared the family news on Instagram, publishing several photographs of the newborn. The couple have named their daughter Sophie, who was born on Sunday, according to German newspaper Bild.

The images showed ter Stegen and Silares with their new baby, alongside the goalkeeper’s two sons from his previous marriage. Ben is six years old, while Tom is two.

Sophie’s birth comes about a year after ter Stegen publicly confirmed his relationship with Silares. The Germany international revealed the relationship in June 2025, shortly after announcing his separation from his first wife, Daniela.

Ter Stegen and Daniela had been together since 2012 and married in 2017. They announced their separation in March 2025 after several years of marriage, during which they had two children.

Despite the breakdown of their relationship, ter Stegen has previously said he remains determined to maintain a positive relationship with Daniela for the sake of their sons. He explained that they live close to one another, allowing him to see Ben and Tom every day.

The goalkeeper’s happy personal news comes as he attempts to regain stability in his professional life following a difficult period disrupted by injuries. Those problems kept him out of Germany’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Ter Stegen remains under contract with Barcelona until 2028, but moved to Ajax Amsterdam on loan on 4 August. The Netherlands club represents an opportunity for him to recover his form and re-establish himself after his recent fitness setbacks.

His start at Ajax has been encouraging. The team remained unbeaten in its first three matches, while ter Stegen recorded a clean sheet in the Dutch league victory over PEC Zwolle.

The move also gives the German goalkeeper regular competitive football as he looks to rebuild his position at club and international level. His contract situation means Barcelona continue to hold his registration, but his immediate focus is on contributing to Ajax during the loan spell.

Away from the pitch, the arrival of Sophie marks a new stage for ter Stegen and Silares. It also adds to a changing family situation following his separation from Daniela and the couple’s efforts to remain close for their children.

Ter Stegen is therefore balancing a significant moment in his personal life with an important period in his career. As he celebrates becoming a father for the third time, he is also working to restore his confidence and performances with Ajax Amsterdam.
