The Paris Criminal Court witnessed a dramatic turn of events during the trial involving Mathias Pogba, brother of football star Paul Pogba, as tensions boiled over late on Friday. Mathias, who has yet to provide his testimony, became the center of controversy following his lawyer’s heated objections to the court’s schedule and his own provocative remarks.
Mathias Pogba is one of six defendants in the high-profile case, with five others having already testified.
Despite the presiding judge’s insistence on hearing from him, the session ended with the postponement of his testimony to next week, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the trial’s conclusion.
Heated Exchange and Provocative Comments
At approximately 9:10 p.m., following hours of exhaustive deliberations, the presiding judge expressed her intent to proceed with Mathias Pogba’s questioning.
The announcement prompted a strong reaction from Mathias’ legal representative, Maître Mbeko Tabula, who argued that the late timing undermined his client’s ability to respond appropriately.
“How can we, in a country of human rights, question a person in such conditions? He is risking his freedom, his life is at stake. We are not in China,” Tabula exclaimed, drawing attention with the controversial comparison.
Mathias himself, who had remained silent throughout the proceedings, also declined to testify, stating that he was not in a position to provide answers that day.
Even Paul Pogba’s lawyer, Maître Carine Piccio, supported the call for a suspension, emphasizing the need for fairness in the proceedings.
Trial Delays Raise Concerns
After deliberating on the matter, the presiding judge ruled to postpone Mathias Pogba’s testimony to Tuesday, 3 December, at 9:30 a.m. This decision aligned with the final day initially scheduled for the trial but introduced logistical challenges.
Given the packed agenda, the judge acknowledged the likelihood of extending proceedings into Wednesday, Thursday, or even the following week.
The trial, which has garnered significant public interest, continues to unfold with heightened anticipation.
