Former Egypt assistant coach Diyaa El Sayed has suggested that Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena could be a better fit for Al Ahly’s midfield than current starter Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane.
Mokoena, a key figure for the Bafana Bafana, was previously linked with a move to the Egyptian giants ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, though a transfer never materialized.
Speaking on CBC’s sports programme Number One, El Sayed highlighted Al Ahly’s struggles in midfield this season and argued that Mokoena’s technical abilities could strengthen the team.
“Mokoena of Mamelodi Sundowns is technically better than Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane,” he said.
“Al Ahly have not benefited from Ben Romdhane properly so far, despite his standout performance in one match against Porto, because he has not been used correctly within the team’s system.”
Romdhane joined Al Ahly at the start of the season from Hungarian club Ferencvaros for €1.58 million.
The Tunisia international, who also played at AFCON 2025, has made 21 appearances for the Egyptian side this season, contributing one goal and four assists.
