Tarik Sektioui hails Morocco’s tactical discipline in CHAN 2024 win over Angola

Morocco head coach Tarik Sektioui has praised his players’ tactical maturity following their 2-0 victory over Angola in the opening Group A fixture of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), held at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium.

Speaking during the post-match press conference on Sunday, Sektioui acknowledged the intensity of the contest but lauded his squad’s discipline and execution.

“We knew it would be a tough and high-tempo encounter,” he said. “But the players showed great maturity and commitment, and we succeeded in making the difference. Earning the three points in this first match is extremely satisfying.”

The win places Morocco in a strong position early in the tournament, with Sektioui emphasizing the importance of building momentum.

“It’s a vital victory that will boost our confidence moving forward. We want to carry this spirit and determination into the coming matches.”

Reflecting on Angola’s performance, the Moroccan coach admitted his side was tested by a well-organised opponent. “They had speed, individual quality, and a compact defensive structure capable of outnumbering us in midfield,” Sektioui observed.

“We managed to adapt tactically, which was crucial. Now we turn our attention to our next challenge.”

Morocco’s next test will come against tournament hosts Kenya on August 10 at the Kasarani Stadium. Sektioui was quick to underline the need for consistency.

“We’ll need the same intensity, discipline, and aggression against Kenya,” he said. “Playing the host nation will add another layer of difficulty, but our mentality must remain the same.”

Team captain Mohamed Rabie Hrimat, who delivered a standout performance and was named Man of the Match, echoed his coach’s sentiments. “This is a strong start for us,” Hrimat said.

“It gives us a lot of motivation for the rest of the competition. We came into this tournament with belief, and this result reflects our preparation.”

Hrimat highlighted the strength of the current squad, comprised entirely of players based in the Moroccan domestic league. “The quality we have in the squad was clear to see. We’ve had excellent preparation both at home and here in Kenya, and we’re ready to face any opponent.”

The midfielder made no secret of Morocco’s ambitions in the competition. “Our ultimate goal is to win the title. We’re taking it one match at a time, but our target remains clear.”

Despite the loss, Angola’s head coach Pedro Gonçalves remained upbeat about his side’s performance, citing a lack of cutting edge as the key difference.

“We created numerous chances and enjoyed a good share of possession,” he said. “But we couldn’t capitalise at the right moments.”

Gonçalves acknowledged Morocco’s strength, particularly in seizing decisive opportunities. “They are a well-drilled and experienced team. In the second half, we pushed forward and took some risks, but that left space behind and Morocco punished us.”

With the group stage now underway, all eyes will be on the Atlas Lions’ upcoming clash against Kenya, which promises to be a significant encounter in determining the Group A standings.
