Tarek Yehia: Zamalek are 85% favorites to win Egyptian League title
Former Zamalek coach Tarek Yehia believes the White Knights are now overwhelming favorites to win the Egyptian Premier League title, insisting the club holds more than an 80 percent chance of lifting the trophy.
The White Knights currently sit on top of the Egyptian Premier League standings with 53 points, followed closely by Pyramids FC, who has 51 points.
Despite the fierce battle, Tarek Yehia has tipped Zamalek as the clear favourites to annex the title at the end of the current football campaign.
“If we talk in percentages according to the table, then Zamalek’s percentage is above 80-85%, while the remaining 15% is divided between Al Ahly and Pyramids,” he told MBC Egypt.
“The first reason is Pyramids winning their last match, while the second reason is that the main competitor, Al Ahly SC, has moved away from direct competition. That brought Zamalek much closer because the title race is now mainly between Zamalek and Pyramids,” he explained.
“If Zamalek and Pyramids finish with the same number of points, Zamalek would have the advantage under the current regulations,” he noted.
“Thank God Al Ahly moved away because if they finished level with Zamalek, they would still win the league based on head-to-head results,” he said.
Yehia concluded by outlining the only realistic scenario that could see Al Ahly return to the title picture.
“The only scenario for Al Ahly to become champions is if Zamalek lose, Pyramids draw, and Al Ahly win. Meanwhile, Zamalek only need a draw,” he added.
Meanwhile, Yehia praised Pyramids FC after their recent Egypt Cup triumph and acknowledged the club’s rapid rise in Egyptian football.
“Congratulations to Pyramids after winning the Egypt Cup. It is an important championship and a great achievement for Pyramids Club, having won the African Champions League last season and the Egypt Cup this year,” he said.
“Pyramids is a club that deserves all appreciation and respect, a respectable system that is running well, but forget about the league,” Yehia stated.
“I know football very well, and this is football. Anything is possible, but Zamalek is the closest by a large margin.”
