Tarek Soliman, former Al Ahly and current Arab Contractors goalkeeping coach, has been assessing the performances of goalkeepers participating in the current edition of the Africa Cup of Nations 2024.
The tournament is currently underway in Ivory Coast, spanning from January 13 to February 11.
During a phone interview on the “Your Morning Sports” program, broadcasted on Youth and Sports Radio and hosted by journalist Naglaa Helmy.
Soliman remarked, “The current championship boasts a significant number of outstanding goalkeepers, led by Cameroon’s André Onana, the goalkeeper for Manchester City, and Senegal’s Édouard Mendy, the goalkeeper for Al Ahli Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
Additionally, we have Ronwen Williams, the goalkeeper for Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African national team.”
Soliman went on to express his perspective on Egypt’s goalkeeper, Mohamed El Shenawy, stating, “I also believe that Mohamed El Shenawy, the goalkeeper for the Egyptian national team, is among the best goalkeepers in the Africa Cup of Nations.
However, his evaluation during the Mozambique match did not exceed 5 out of 10, considering the two goals conceded and the loss of two points.”
In the world of football, the role of goalkeepers is crucial, and Soliman’s insights shed light on the nuanced assessments of their performances during this highly anticipated continental tournament.
As the Africa Cup of Nations unfolds, the spotlight on these goalkeeping talents intensifies, providing fans with a deeper appreciation for the strategic and critical role they play in the beautiful game.
