Tapelo Xoki explains mental battle after lengthy injury absence

Orlando Pirates vice-captain Tapelo Xoki says recovering from a long-term injury has tested him mentally as well as physically, and praised the club’s medical staff and players for supporting him during his absence.

The defender was speaking at Rand Stadium on Monday, as Pirates prepared for Saturday’s MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Xoki was one of the Pirates players affected by a road traffic incident involving members of the club’s technical team and staff in September 2025. Orlando Pirates confirmed at the time that the incident happened on the R21 highway as the group travelled back from Gqeberha after a 3-0 win over Chippa United.

The 31-year-old subsequently spent an extended period out of action. His rehabilitation demanded a physical recovery, but also the mental strength to regain confidence in his body.

“Being injured is not only physical. It’s a lot mental than the body,” Xoki said.

“First, there has to be that trust between the mind and the body. The mind has to trust what the body has to do for you to feel like yourself again.

“For me, that’s where I give credit to our physios. They’re not only treating the body, but also they are counselling me most of the time.”

Support from Pirates team-mates

Xoki also credited his team-mates with helping him remain connected to the squad while he was unable to play.

He said the players continued to value his contribution, ensuring he did not feel isolated or forgotten during his time away from the pitch.

“And I also have to give credit to the teammates of mine that have never made me feel like I’m an outsider,” he added.

“They’ve never made me feel that I’ve been out for that long. I’ve always felt part of the team with my contribution.

“Even though I’m not playing, it’s always been appreciated. So that helps in terms of making me feel confident and making me feel appreciated and part of the team.”

Xoki’s return comes with Pirates facing Sundowns in the MTN8 final on Saturday, but he said the occasion was not about his personal comeback.

Instead, the centre-back stressed that every member of the squad would need to be ready to contribute as Pirates pursue the trophy.

“So, for a while, it’s a great feeling. But now, we are playing a final. It’s not really about me.

“It’s about the team. It’s about every one of us being ready and being ready to contribute to the team.

“And I’m sure every guy that is in the changing room is ready and willing to put in their 100% for the Cup.”
