Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra fined and banned three matches for referee assault

Malian international goalkeeper Djigui Diarra has been handed a significant suspension following disciplinary incidents in the Tanzania Premier League.

The Young Africans shot-stopper was punished after his controversial behavior during the Matchday 21 clash against Mtibwa Sugar FC.

According to the Tanzania Premier League Board, Diarra is accused of physically assaulting the match referee, an act described as “unacceptable and against the spirit of the game.”

In response, the league authorities imposed a three-match ban on the goalkeeper, effectively ruling him out of Young Africans’ upcoming fixtures.

Besides, Diarra faces financial sanctions. He has been fined 2 million Tanzanian shillings for the assault. An additional 2 million shillings fine was levied after the goalkeeper reportedly made an offensive gesture while leaving the pitch at the end of the match.

The incidents have sparked debate among fans and pundits, with many expressing concern over discipline in the league. “Players must respect referees and uphold the integrity of the game,” a league official said, highlighting that such actions would not be tolerated.

Young Africans now face the challenge of navigating their next matches without their first-choice goalkeeper, while Diarra will need to serve his suspension and pay the imposed fines before returning to action.

The club has yet to release an official statement on whether they will appeal the decision, but the ban serves as a stern warning to all players about the consequences of misconduct on the field.
