Tanzania head coach Bakari Shime has praised the growing maturity and discipline of his players ahead of their crucial 2026 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa.
The Twiga Stars arrived in the Ethiopian capital on Monday, holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg in Dar es Salaam.
They now stand just one step away from securing a place in the final tournament of the 2026 AFCON.
Shime believes his players have reached a new level of confidence and composure that can guide them to qualification.
Speaking on the eve of the match, the Tanzanian coach expressed satisfaction with the mental focus and physical condition of his team.
“The team is doing very well and all players are in top form,” Shime said. “What pleases me most is their focus and maturity.
They know what is at stake and how to handle the pressure.”
He also explained that this maturity reflects a long-term vision that extends beyond AFCON qualification, with an eye on preparations for the next Olympic Games.
“We view this qualification as a step toward the Olympics in the United States,” Shime added.
“The players are learning to stay calm under pressure, and that mental strength defines top-level football.”
In the first leg, Tanzania displayed strong tactical discipline and efficient attacking play.
Jamila Rajab opened the scoring following sustained pressure on Ethiopia’s defense, while Aisha Mnunka sealed the victory with a composed finish in the second half.
Reflecting on the win, Shime highlighted his players’ improved game management and decision-making.
“They showed real intelligence in their play,” he said. “In the past, we might have rushed our actions, but now there is patience and control. That shows the team’s growth and progress.”
Ahead of the return leg, Tanzania need only a draw or a win of any margin to secure their ticket to the continental finals.
Ethiopia, meanwhile, face a difficult challenge and must win by at least three goals to overturn the deficit.
Shime remains confident that his team can deliver another disciplined and focused performance to complete their mission.
The coach believes that the Twiga Stars’ growing maturity, unity, and tactical understanding will prove decisive in Addis Ababa.
Tanzania’s success in this qualifier would mark another milestone in their steady rise within African women’s football, a reflection of years of structured development and collective belief under Shime’s leadership.
