Tammy Abraham yet to decide on Ipswich Town loan move from Aston Villa

Ipswich Town have agreed a deal with Aston Villa to sign Tammy Abraham on loan before the summer transfer window closes, but the England striker has not yet decided whether to make the move.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Ipswich are close to adding a new forward as manager Gary O’Neil looks to strengthen his squad for the club’s battle to remain in the Premier League.

Aston Villa have accepted Ipswich’s proposal for a temporary deal involving Abraham, who has won 11 caps for England. However, the transfer is currently on hold while the 28-year-old considers his options and decides whether he wants to spend the next 12 months competing in a relegation fight.

Abraham returned to Aston Villa from Turkish club Besiktas in January, but has been unable to establish himself as a regular starter under Unai Emery. Ollie Watkins remains the preferred option in the central striking role, limiting Abraham’s opportunities since his return.

The forward scored twice in 12 Premier League appearances during Aston Villa’s 2025-26 campaign. He also featured in three European matches in a season that ended with Aston Villa winning the Europa League.

Reports earlier this week suggested Aston Villa would be prepared to allow Abraham to leave on loan for another Premier League club. The player is currently considered to be outside Emery’s plans, despite returning to a side that qualified for the Champions League this season.

Aston Villa have endured a difficult start to the 2026-27 campaign after several of their leading players departed in search of better opportunities. Their European qualification had raised expectations around the club, but those ambitions were tempered by a heavy defeat in their opening league fixture.

Emery’s side were beaten 4-0 by Brighton in the first round of Premier League matches. They are now preparing to face Arsenal in a challenging fixture at Villa Park, a ground whose capacity is set to be reduced in the coming period.

Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, will visit Aston Villa on Monday evening. Mikel Arteta’s team have begun the new season with consecutive victories over Manchester City and Coventry City.

For Ipswich, bringing in Abraham would provide O’Neil with another experienced attacking option as the club attempt to strengthen their squad for the demands of Premier League football. The proposed loan has already received approval from Aston Villa, but its completion depends on Abraham’s decision over where he wants to continue his career this season.

No final agreement has been reached with the player, meaning the move remains uncertain despite the two clubs having reached terms. Abraham must now determine whether a temporary switch to Ipswich represents the right opportunity, with the club’s immediate priority being Premier League survival.
