Taiwo Abdulrafiu: Nigeria left-back at Rivers United linked with Azam FC move
Nigeria defender Taiwo Abdulrafiu of Rivers United has been linked with a move to Tanzanian club Azam FC as the left-back attracts interest ahead of the final year of his contract.
Abdulrafiu, 24, is under contract with Rivers United until 30 June 2026, a situation that would likely require Azam to negotiate a fee if they decide to formalise their interest. The full-back is currently valued at around €125,000, a figure that offers a guide to the level at which any potential deal might be structured rather than a fixed asking price.
The left-footer, who stands at 1.90m, has established himself as a specialist at left-back for the Port Harcourt side. His physical profile and natural left foot give him a clearly defined role in a position that remains a priority area for many clubs in regional markets.
Abdulrafiu joined Rivers United on 31 August 2024 and is now approaching the midpoint of his deal, a phase when clubs typically begin to assess whether to renew a player’s contract or consider offers. Any move to Azam would represent a switch from the Nigerian top flight to one of East Africa’s more ambitious outfits, with both clubs likely to weigh the timing carefully given the defender’s contract running for another year.
For now, Abdulrafiu remains a Rivers United player with two seasons left to run on his current agreement, and his situation will be closely watched as the 2026 contract end-date draws nearer.
