France-Cameroon centre-back Sylvain Deslandes has completed a move to Japanese side Thespa Gunma on a free transfer from his status as a free agent, signing a deal that begins on 2026-04-01 and runs until 2027-06-30. The 28-year-old joins the J2/J3 Special Season club with a current market value listed at €125k, marking the latest step in a career that has already taken him across several European leagues.
Deslandes arrives in Gunma after a spell without a club following his departure from Cypriot side Omonia 29is Maiou, which he left as a free agent. The switch to Japan confirms that the defender will continue his career abroad rather than in France or Cameroon, adding the J2/J3 Special Season to a CV that already includes England, Spain, Romania, Hungary, Azerbaijan and Cyprus. The move was completed with no transfer fee involved, reflecting his free-agent status.
Born in Kouoptamo and standing at 1.90m, Deslandes is a left-footed central defender whose main position is at the heart of the back line. His journey began in the youth ranks of SM Caen, progressing from SM Caen Jugend to SM Caen U17 and then SM Caen B, before securing a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in England. From there he gained experience through a series of loans and transfers, including spells at Bury FC and Portsmouth FC in the English system and a loan to FC Jumilla in Spain.
After leaving Wolves, Deslandes built a solid reputation in Eastern Europe. He moved to Romanian club ACSC FC Arges, then to Debreceni VSC in Hungary, where his market value peaked at around €300k during his mid-twenties. Later came a move to FK Sabail in Azerbaijan, followed by Omonia 29is Maiou in Cyprus, before he again entered free agency and ultimately agreed terms with Thespa Gunma.
The defender’s market value has gradually decreased in recent years, from €300k at Debreceni VSC to €125k shortly before this move, but his breadth of experience across multiple football cultures makes him a notable addition for a club operating in Japan’s ambitious J2/J3 Special Season structure. Thespa Gunma gain a player who has adapted to varied tactical systems and levels of competition, from the intensity of English football to the technical emphasis found in Romania and Hungary.
Deslandes holds dual nationality with France and Cameroon, and his arrival in Japan adds another international chapter to a career defined by mobility and resilience. For Thespa Gunma, signing an experienced, left-footed centre-back without paying a transfer fee represents a calculated attempt to reinforce their defensive options while keeping costs under control.
With his contract now in place from 2026-04-01 to 2027-06-30, Deslandes will aim to stabilise his career after several short-term stops and free-agent periods. If he settles quickly in the J2/J3 Special Season and recaptures the form that once pushed his value to €300k, this move to Thespa Gunma could help rebuild his reputation and open up further opportunities in Asian football or a future return to the European stage.
