Swiss-Nigerian defender Manuel Akanji keeps Inter Milan future open
Manuel Akanji has refused to confirm whether he will remain at Inter Milan beyond this season, saying “We’ll see what happens” after helping the Nerazzurri to a 2-1 win over Verona on Sunday.
The Swiss international, who has Nigerian roots through his father, joined Inter on deadline day from Manchester City on a season-long loan.
The move includes an option to buy, with the deal reportedly becoming permanent if certain performance conditions are met.
Akanji has quickly become one of Cristian Chivu’s most trusted players this campaign, featuring more minutes than any other Inter defender so far.
His assured performances have strengthened the club’s backline and earned praise from supporters and management alike.
Speaking to CalcioMercato after the weekend victory, Akanji said: “We’ll see what happens at the end of the season.
“I’m trying to do my best on the pitch, and in the end we’ll see if Inter decide to keep me or not: the decision is up to them. They seem happy, but we’ll see what happens. For now, there’s nothing.”
The 29-year-old also reflected on his adaptation to life in Italy, expressing satisfaction with both the club environment and the competitiveness of Serie A.
“The league is as competitive as I expected. I like the club, the coach, the staff – I’m very happy here.”
Inter’s hierarchy is expected to review Akanji’s situation in the coming months.
With veteran defenders Francesco Acerbi, Stefan De Vrij and Matteo Darmian all nearing the end of their contracts, the Swiss-Nigerian could be seen as a long-term fixture in the Nerazzurri defence.
Akanji’s calm presence, tactical intelligence and ability to play across the backline have made him indispensable during Inter’s strong domestic run.
His form has also boosted his international prospects ahead of next summer’s UEFA Euro 2026 qualifiers.
